Cooks employed under Meghalaya’s PM‑POSHAN scheme have said they will work only one day a week and have threatened to halt the programme entirely if their pay concerns are not addressed.

The state government of Meghalaya runs the PM‑POSHAN programme, a centrally funded initiative aimed at providing nutritious meals to school children. Kitchen staff hired under the scheme are responsible for preparing and serving these meals across the state.

Earlier this week, the cooks announced that they will limit their work to a single day each week, citing dissatisfaction with their current remuneration. They have also warned that if their pay grievances are not resolved, they will suspend all cooking operations, effectively shutting down the meal service.

Authorities have been urged to engage with the workers to prevent disruption to the nutrition programme, which serves thousands of students daily. A prolonged shutdown could affect school attendance and the health benefits the scheme seeks to deliver.
