Meghalaya MP James Sangma has pledged to take the long‑standing wage demand of anganwadi workers to the central government, seeking a revision of their pay scales.

Meghalaya Lok Sabha member James Sangma announced that he will formally present the wage grievance of the state’s anganwadi workers to the Union government. The workers, who form the backbone of the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme, have been demanding a revision of their pay scales for several years, citing inflation and increased responsibilities.

Sangma, who heads the state’s ruling party, said he would meet senior officials at the Ministry of Women and Child Development to discuss a feasible salary structure. He emphasized that timely resolution is essential to maintain the quality of nutrition and early‑childhood services delivered through anganwadi centres.

The move comes amid broader calls across several states for better remuneration of frontline health and nutrition staff. While the central government has not yet responded, Sangma’s intervention signals a political push to address the long‑standing pay issue.

If successful, the revised wages could set a precedent for other states, potentially leading to a nationwide review of anganwadi workers’ compensation.
