The Meghalaya government inaugurated a motorcaravan scheme to boost tourism and announced upgrades to the Ward’s Lake amenities in Shillong.

Shillong – State officials gathered on Thursday to flag off a new motorcaravan scheme aimed at expanding Meghalaya’s tourism offerings. The programme, announced by the Chief Minister’s office, will provide specially equipped motorcaravans for hire, allowing visitors to explore remote hill stations and cultural sites with greater comfort.

The launch ceremony also highlighted a parallel initiative to refurbish Ward’s Lake, a popular recreational spot in Shillong. Upgrades include new seating, improved lighting, modern sanitation facilities and enhanced landscaping to accommodate increased footfall.

Authorities said the combined efforts are expected to generate employment for local drivers and artisans while attracting domestic tourists during the peak season. The motorcaravan fleet will be rolled out in phases starting next month, and the lake’s renovation is slated for completion by the end of the year.

The state tourism department will monitor visitor response and may expand the scheme to other districts if demand rises.
