The Meghalaya High Court criticised a group of lawyers for failing to appear in court, citing a clash with the state’s Advocate General.

The bench of the Meghalaya High Court issued a formal reprimand to several practising lawyers who did not attend a scheduled hearing. The court’s observation was recorded in a written order that highlighted the seriousness of the lawyers’ collective absence.

According to the court, the lawyers stayed away from the courtroom following a dispute with the state’s Advocate General. While the exact nature of the disagreement was not detailed, the bench noted that the conflict should not impede the functioning of the judicial process.

The High Court reminded the bar that attendance in court is a fundamental duty and that any grievance with the Advocate General must be pursued through appropriate channels, not by shirking courtroom responsibilities. The judges warned that repeated non‑compliance could attract disciplinary action under the Advocates Act.

The matter is expected to be referred to the Bar Council of Meghalaya for further review, ensuring that professional conduct standards are upheld.
