The Meghalaya government inaugurated a new Rs 31.05‑crore Maternal and Child Health Facility in Nongstoin, aiming to improve healthcare services for mothers and children in the district.

Meghalaya's health department officially opened a state‑funded Maternal and Child Health Facility in Nongstoin on Thursday. The centre, built at a cost of Rs 31.05 crore, is equipped with modern obstetric and paediatric wards, a neonatal intensive care unit and diagnostic labs.

The inauguration was attended by senior state officials who highlighted the project's role in reducing maternal and infant mortality in the West Khasi Hills district. The facility is expected to serve thousands of women and children from remote villages, offering free or subsidised treatment.

Health experts said the new centre aligns with the state's broader strategy to strengthen rural healthcare infrastructure and expand access to quality services across Meghalaya.

The government plans to monitor the centre's performance closely and integrate it with existing primary health centres to ensure a seamless referral system for high‑risk cases.

Local community leaders expressed optimism that the centre will alleviate the long travel distances previously required for specialised maternal and child care.
