The Meghalaya state government has earmarked ₹10 crore to fund research on historical and cultural connections between the Khasi‑Jaintia peoples and Southeast Asian nations.
The Meghalaya state cabinet approved a budget of ₹10 crore for a dedicated research programme aimed at tracing the historical, linguistic and cultural ties of the Khasi and Jaintia tribes with countries of Southeast Asia. The funding will support field surveys, archival work and collaborations with universities and research institutes both within India and abroad.
The initiative, announced by the state’s Department of Culture and Heritage, seeks to document shared traditions, migration patterns and trade links that date back centuries. Officials said the study could enhance understanding of the region’s heritage and potentially boost cultural tourism.
Implementation will be overseen by a committee of scholars from the North-Eastern Hill University and the Indian Council of Historical Research. The project is slated to commence in the next fiscal year, with periodic reports to be presented to the state government.
