The Meghalaya government has highlighted a shortage of teachers and linguistic challenges as major obstacles to implementing the National Education Policy 2020 in the state.

Meghalaya's education authorities have formally raised concerns that a lack of qualified teachers is hampering the rollout of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 across the state. Officials say the shortfall affects both primary and secondary levels, making it difficult to meet the policy's ambitious student‑teacher ratio targets.

In addition to staffing gaps, the state has pointed out language hurdles, noting that the multilingual fabric of Meghalaya—where Khasi, Garo and English coexist—complicates curriculum delivery under NEP 2020. Aligning teaching materials with local languages while adhering to the policy's emphasis on mother‑tongue instruction has proven challenging.

The state government has urged the central Ministry of Education to provide additional support, including accelerated teacher recruitment and the development of region‑specific teaching resources. It emphasized that addressing these issues is essential to ensure the policy's objectives of inclusive, quality education are realized for Meghalaya's students.

Education experts observe that similar challenges are being reported in other northeastern states, but Meghalaya's early flagging of the problems could help shape targeted interventions at the national level.

The department plans to submit a detailed action plan to the central authorities within the next few weeks, seeking both financial assistance and technical guidance to bridge the identified gaps.
