The Meghalaya state cabinet has approved the permanent closure of Cherra Cement Limited in Jowai and has decided to write off ₹24.43 crore in outstanding dues owed by the company.

The Meghalaya cabinet has recently approved the permanent shutdown of Cherra Cement Limited, a major industrial unit located in Jowai. In a move aimed at easing the financial burden on the state, the government has decided to write off ₹24.43 crore of the company’s outstanding dues.

The decision follows years of financial distress at the cement plant, which had struggled to meet its debt obligations and had been unable to secure additional investment. By cancelling the debt, the state hopes to reduce the fiscal strain on its budget.

The closure will affect hundreds of employees who have worked at the plant for decades. While the government has not yet detailed a rehabilitation plan, officials have indicated that measures will be taken to support displaced workers.

This development comes after earlier attempts to revive the plant, including proposals for a joint venture and a restructuring plan, all of which failed to materialise.
