Anonymous invoices suggest the Meghalaya Attorney General is billing Rs 1.5 lakh for each district‑court hearing, prompting the state Bar Association to claim the official has misled the legal community.

Anonymous billing records obtained by local media indicate that the Attorney General of Meghalaya is demanding a fee of Rs 1.5 lakh for every appearance before a district court. The documents, which list individual hearings and corresponding charges, have raised questions about the propriety of such payments from litigants or their representatives.

The Meghalaya Bar Association responded to the revelations by issuing a statement that the Attorney General had misrepresented his fee structure and that the alleged charges contravene professional ethics. The association called for a transparent inquiry and urged the state government to examine whether any statutory provisions are being breached.

No official comment has been received from the Attorney General’s office as of the time of publishing. The matter is expected to be discussed in the upcoming session of the state’s legal council, where representatives of the bar and the government will seek clarification on the invoicing practice.

If the allegations are substantiated, the case could prompt a review of fee norms for senior legal officers in Meghalaya and potentially lead to disciplinary action under the Bar Council of India’s code of conduct.
