The Assam health department announced that deaths from maternal sepsis have fallen to 8 percent, marking a significant improvement in maternal care.

Assam's health department released data showing that the proportion of maternal deaths caused by sepsis has declined to 8 percent, a notable step forward for the state's maternal health outcomes. The figure reflects the latest monitoring cycle and is being hailed as a milestone in the ongoing effort to reduce pregnancy‑related complications.
Maternal sepsis, a life‑threatening infection that can develop during or after childbirth, has historically been a leading cause of maternal mortality in many parts of India. In Assam, concerted actions over the past few years have aimed to curb this trend through early detection, standardized treatment protocols and capacity building among frontline health workers.
The department credited the reduction to intensified training of obstetric staff, wider availability of rapid diagnostic kits, and the implementation of a state‑wide antibiotic stewardship programme. Health officials also highlighted stronger referral linkages between primary health centres and tertiary hospitals, ensuring that severe cases receive timely care.
While the 8‑percent rate signals progress, officials cautioned that continued vigilance is essential. They announced plans to expand community awareness campaigns and to integrate sepsis screening into routine antenatal visits across the state.
The latest data will be incorporated into the upcoming state health review, with the aim of further lowering maternal mortality and meeting national health targets.
