Devadurga, Jalahalli, October 29: A grand mass marriage ceremony involving more than 76 couples was organised by the Sri Lakshmi Ranganatha Govinda Seva Samiti at the premises of the Sri Lakshmi Ranganatha Swamy Temple, the presiding deity of Jalahalli village in Devadurga taluk of Raichur district.

The programme began with a devotional song rendered by Dr. R.S. Hulamani Gowda. This was followed by the collective singing of a farmers' song in honour of the farming community. Dr. Mallikarjuna Vishwaradhya Shivacharya, the Kashi Jagadguru, inaugurated the programme by lighting the ceremonial lamp.

Mass Marriages Promote Equality and Reduce Financial Burden: MLA Karemmma G. Nayak

Presiding over the programme, Devadurga MLA Karemmma G. Nayak said that marriage is an important milestone in every person's life. However, spending excessively in the name of wedding celebrations has become increasingly common in recent times. In this context, mass marriages help reduce the financial burden on poor and middle-class families while promoting equality and a spirit of harmony in society.

She appreciated the Govinda Seva Samiti for bringing together people from different communities and organising the mass marriage ceremony for more than 76 couples with everyone's cooperation. She stated that organising such programmes is a major responsibility and urged everyone to encourage and support mass marriages.

The MLA further stated that since being elected, she had prioritised various development works in Jalahalli village, including school buildings and road construction. For the past three years, she has been contributing gold mangalsutras to brides participating in the mass marriage ceremony as part of her social service.

She added that such initiatives provide assistance to economically disadvantaged families and also help eliminate social discrimination.

Mass Marriages Are a Boon to Ordinary Families: Kashi Jagadguru

Delivering his blessings, Dr. Mallikarjuna Vishwaradhya Shivacharya, the Kashi Jagadguru, said that even in rural areas, organising a single wedding nowadays costs approximately ₹5 lakh to ₹6 lakh. Under such circumstances, arranging marriages has become a significant financial challenge for ordinary families.

He appreciated the Sri Ranganatha Swamy Govinda Seva Samiti of Jalahalli for organising the mass marriage ceremony with the cooperation and support of the public, describing it as a meaningful and commendable initiative.

He also highlighted the ancient history of the Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple and noted that its annual fair has been celebrated grandly for many years, attracting large numbers of devotees every year.

However, he expressed concern that the growing crowds at the annual fair could create a shortage of available space in the coming years.

He urged devotees and villagers to remain vigilant in protecting the temple premises so that religious programmes, including the annual fair and mass marriages, could continue without difficulties in the future. He also suggested making alternative arrangements for the priests to ensure that religious ceremonies and other programmes could be conducted without interruption.

Mass Marriages Organised Since 2013

In his introductory speech, Giriyappa Pujari stated that the Govinda Seva Samiti of the Sri Lakshmi Ranganatha Swamy Temple had been organising mass marriages since 2013.

He said that MLA Karemmma G. Nayak had been providing gold mangalsutras to brides and grooms for the past three years. Former Surpur MLA Rajugouda had been supplying clothes to the couples since 2013.

Similarly, Ramanagouda has been extending support by donating five quintals of sugar every year.

He expressed gratitude to all donors and well-wishers who have contributed to the successful organisation of the mass marriage ceremony.

Jagadadhya Jayashanteshwara Swamiji, while delivering his blessings, said that everyone should cultivate the habit of donating to those in need. He explained that charity encourages a spirit of service and compassion in society while also contributing to spiritual growth.
