Manipur's State‑of‑Origin agreement with Kuki representatives will not be extended, official Konthoujam announced, as authorities intensify a crackdown following the killing of three Meitei individuals.
Manipur's State‑of‑Origin (SoO) arrangement with several Kuki factions has been left to lapse, senior party functionary Konthoujam confirmed on Tuesday. The decision comes amid heightened security operations after three Meitei civilians were shot dead in separate incidents earlier this week, prompting a broader crackdown on communal violence.
Konthoujam, speaking to local media, said the government had reviewed the SoO pact and concluded that extending it would not serve the current peace‑building objectives. He added that the administration is focusing on restoring law and order while investigating the killings.
The three Meitei deaths have sparked protests across the valley, with community leaders demanding swift justice. Security forces have deployed additional personnel in Imphal and surrounding districts, and several arrests have been reported in connection with the attacks.
While the SoO agreement was initially hailed as a step toward easing ethnic tensions between the Meitei majority and Kuki minorities, officials now argue that the deteriorating security environment necessitates a reassessment of all outreach measures.
The state government has not ruled out future dialogue with Kuki representatives, but emphasized that any renewed engagement will be contingent on a stable security situation and tangible progress in the criminal investigations.
