The Manipur administration said it will act on the demand to halt the National Register of Citizens and the upcoming census, urging citizens to cooperate.

The state government announced today that it will take steps to address the popular ‘No NRC, No Census’ movement, which has been voiced across Manipur’s hill districts.
Officials said the move reflects concerns that the NRC and the 2024 census could exacerbate ethnic tensions and affect land rights. A high‑level committee has been formed to review legal and administrative implications.
The administration appealed to civil society, political parties and the public to cooperate with the committee’s work, emphasizing that any decision will be taken in accordance with the Constitution and central guidelines.
The statement came ahead of the scheduled nationwide census, and the chief minister reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding the rights of all communities while ensuring compliance with national policies.
No further details were released, and the central government has not yet commented on Manipur’s stance.
