Manipur’s chief minister has appealed to banks to increase financing for women‑run businesses, setting a goal of creating 100,000 women with assets of at least one crore rupees by 2029.

Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh called on public and private banks to expand credit facilities for women entrepreneurs during a press briefing in Imphal. He emphasized that easier access to finance is essential for scaling small enterprises run by women in the state.

The chief minister announced an ambitious target of creating 100,000 "Lakhpati Didis" – women whose net worth reaches one crore rupees – by the end of 2029. The goal is part of a broader effort to boost inclusive growth and reduce gender gaps in income and employment.

State officials said the plan will be supported by existing schemes such as the Mahila Coir Yojana and new incentives for banks that meet lending benchmarks for women‑led ventures. Monitoring mechanisms will track the number of beneficiaries and the volume of credit disbursed over the next six years.

Industry analysts noted that while the target is ambitious, it aligns with national priorities under the "Women Entrepreneurship Platform" and could attract additional central‑government funding if progress is demonstrated.
