Residents of Maina in Goa have rallied against a new housing development, citing chronic water shortages as the main grievance.
Residents of the Maina locality in Goa assembled near the proposed housing site to voice their opposition, saying the project threatens to exacerbate existing water scarcity. The gathering, organized by local community groups, featured placards demanding that the development be halted until a reliable water supply is secured.
The protesters highlighted that households in Maina already face irregular water supply, forcing many to rely on tankers and private wells. They argue that adding hundreds of new homes without addressing the water deficit will strain the already limited resources, affecting both current and future residents.
Local authorities were approached by the demonstrators, who sought clarification on the developer's plans for water infrastructure. Officials indicated that they are reviewing the project's compliance with state water regulations, but no definitive decision has been announced.
Water scarcity has become a recurring issue across several Goan villages, prompting community activism and calls for stricter environmental assessments before approving new constructions. The Maina protest underscores the growing tension between development ambitions and basic resource availability.
The residents have pledged to continue their peaceful demonstration until concrete assurances are provided regarding sustainable water provision for the area.
