The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration cancelled 29 drug licences following 937 inspections conducted across the state in a two‑week enforcement drive.

The state’s Food and Drug Administration announced that it has withdrawn licences for 29 pharmaceutical firms after completing 937 spot inspections across Maharashtra. The inspections, carried out over a two‑week period, targeted manufacturing units, wholesale outlets and pharmacies to verify compliance with safety and quality standards.

Authorities said the crackdown was part of a broader effort to curb the circulation of sub‑standard medicines and to enforce stricter regulatory oversight. Licences were cancelled where serious violations were documented, including inadequate storage conditions, lack of proper documentation and failure to meet prescribed manufacturing protocols.

The FDA has warned that affected businesses will have the opportunity to appeal the decision within a stipulated timeframe. Meanwhile, the department plans to continue its audit programme to ensure that remaining licensed entities adhere to the required norms.

Industry bodies have urged the regulator to balance enforcement with clear guidance, emphasizing that compliance is essential for public health safety. The move underscores the state’s commitment to tightening drug quality controls amid rising concerns over counterfeit and unsafe medicines.
