Maharashtra extends Marathi language rule for auto‑taxi drivers by one year, says CM Fadnavis

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced a one‑year extension of the mandatory Marathi proficiency rule for auto‑taxi drivers in Maharashtra.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the state government will prolong the existing requirement that auto‑taxi drivers demonstrate proficiency in Marathi for an additional year. The decision, announced during a press briefing, aims to give drivers more time to meet the language criteria without facing immediate penalties.
The Marathi proficiency rule, originally introduced to improve communication between drivers and passengers, had been set to take effect earlier this year. By extending it, the government hopes to balance the need for linguistic integration with the operational challenges faced by drivers.
Transport officials will monitor compliance and may introduce support measures, such as language training programs, to help drivers attain the required level. The extension will be effective from the date of the announcement and will be reviewed before its expiry.
Stakeholders, including driver unions and passenger groups, have welcomed the additional time, noting that it reduces the risk of job loss while still moving toward the policy’s long‑term goals.
