The Maharashtra government has granted a one‑year extension to traders dealing in loose edible oil, a move announced weeks after the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India imposed a ban on certain oil stocks.
The state cabinet approved a 12‑month extension for vendors who sell edible oil in bulk without packaging, allowing them to continue operations despite the recent Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) ban on specific oil batches.
The extension, announced by the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration, is intended to give traders time to clear existing inventories and comply with the regulatory requirements that triggered the ban.
Industry observers note that loose oil trading forms a significant part of the state's edible‑oil market, especially in rural and semi‑urban areas where packaged products are less affordable. The government said the move will prevent supply disruptions and protect consumer access to affordable cooking oil.
The FSSAI ban, imposed earlier this month, targeted oil consignments that failed to meet safety standards. Traders have been instructed to submit test reports and adhere to labeling norms before resuming normal sales.
The state will monitor compliance closely and may withdraw the extension if violations persist, officials added.
