The Maharashtra government has put a hold on planned school closures and will conduct an impact assessment following public protests.
Mumbai, Oct 10 – The state government of Maharashtra announced that the previously announced shutdown of schools will be suspended while an impact assessment is carried out. Officials said the pause is a direct response to widespread protests by teachers, parents and student groups who raised concerns about the timing and potential disruption to academic calendars.
The education department clarified that the assessment will examine how the closure could affect exam preparation, attendance rates and vulnerable students who rely on school facilities for meals and safety. Findings will guide a revised decision, which could either reinstate the closures with mitigations or keep schools open.
Authorities have urged stakeholders to cooperate with the study and have scheduled a series of consultations over the next two weeks. No new dates for reopening or further action have been announced pending the report's conclusions.
