A recent consultation in Maharashtra has underscored the disparity between the legal entitlements granted to women and the actual land they own.

A state‑level consultation held in Maharashtra brought attention to the persistent mismatch between statutory rights for women and the land they actually control. Participants, including government officials, legal experts and representatives of women’s groups, noted that while legislation guarantees women equal inheritance and ownership rights, a large proportion of women remain without land titles.

The discussion highlighted several obstacles: limited awareness of legal provisions, cumbersome registration procedures, and entrenched social norms that favor male ownership. Data presented during the meeting showed that women’s share of registered agricultural land in the state is significantly lower than the proportion of land they are legally entitled to.

Stakeholders called for concrete steps to bridge the gap, such as simplifying land‑record processes, launching targeted awareness campaigns in rural areas, and strengthening enforcement mechanisms to prevent denial of rights. The consultation concluded with a set of recommendations aimed at ensuring that women’s legal entitlements translate into actual ownership on the ground.
