Maharashtra Chief Minister announced that a feasibility proposal will be submitted to extend the central school nutrition programme up to Class 10.
Maharashtra Chief Minister said the state will prepare and submit a feasibility proposal to the Union government for extending the central school nutrition scheme, commonly known as the Mid-Day Meal, to students up to Class 10. The move aims to broaden the reach of the programme, which currently covers primary classes, and address nutritional gaps among older school‑age children.
The proposal will assess logistical requirements, funding implications and coordination mechanisms between the state education department and the central Ministry of Food Processing Industries, which oversees the scheme. Officials expect the study to be completed within the next few weeks before formal submission.
If approved, the extension could bring additional meals to millions of adolescents across Maharashtra, potentially improving attendance and learning outcomes in secondary schools. The state government has not disclosed a timeline for implementation pending central clearance.
