A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck central Japan early Tuesday, leaving dozens injured and prompting emergency alerts across the region.
The Japan Meteorological Agency reported a magnitude 5.7 tremor hitting the central part of the country at 02:30 local time on Tuesday. The epicenter was located in a sparsely populated area of the Chubu region, near the border of Shizuoka and Nagano prefectures.
Preliminary figures from local authorities indicate that more than 30 people have been treated for injuries, most of them minor cuts and bruises, while a few require hospitalisation. No fatalities have been confirmed.
Emergency services dispatched rescue teams and medical units to the affected towns, and temporary shelters were set up for residents displaced by collapsed walls and damaged roofs. The government has urged citizens to stay alert for possible aftershocks and to follow safety instructions.
The quake also triggered automatic shutdowns of some industrial plants and halted train services on several lines, causing minor disruptions. Officials continue to monitor the situation and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
