A fresh low‑pressure area has developed over the Bay of Bengal and forecasters warn it could intensify into a cyclone before crossing near Chennai.
The India Meteorological Department reported the emergence of a new low‑pressure system over the Bay of Bengal. Satellite imagery and surface observations confirmed the system’s organization, prompting meteorologists to monitor it closely.
Experts noted that sea‑surface temperatures and atmospheric conditions in the region are conducive to cyclogenesis. While the system is still in its formative stage, models suggest it could strengthen into a cyclonic storm within the next 24‑48 hours.
If the system intensifies, it is expected to move westward toward the southeastern coast of India, with the city of Chennai identified as a likely point of crossing. Authorities have been advised to keep coastal communities on alert and to prepare contingency plans for possible heavy rain and wind.
The department will issue updates as the situation evolves, urging residents to follow official advisories and avoid unnecessary travel along vulnerable coastal stretches.
