The Speaker of the Lok Sabha has granted a grace period until September 22 for twenty Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs who broke party ranks to file their responses to disqualification notices under the anti‑defection law. The notice, issued earlier this month, warned that non‑compliance could lead to the loss of their seats.
The rebel legislators had voted contrary to the TMC whip in recent parliamentary proceedings, prompting the party to move for their disqualification. The Speaker, acting under the provisions of the Constitution, allowed the MPs a limited window to present their case before any final decision is taken.
If the MPs fail to submit a satisfactory reply within the stipulated period, the Speaker may recommend their removal from the House, which would trigger by‑elections in the affected constituencies.
