The Kodagu district administration has issued new regulations requiring plastic‑free zones in Madikeri and nearby tourist spots and promoting environmentally friendly homestays.

The district administration of Kodagu announced new rules aimed at boosting tourism while protecting the environment. The regulations make it compulsory to establish plastic‑free zones in Madikeri and surrounding tourist destinations.

Under the rules, vendors, hotels and other service providers must eliminate single‑use plastic items within designated areas. The move is intended to preserve the region’s natural beauty, which attracts nature‑loving visitors.

The guidelines also encourage the development of eco‑friendly homestays by offering incentives such as tax benefits or promotional support to operators that adopt sustainable practices like waste segregation and use of biodegradable materials.

Officials said the measures will enhance the visitor experience and position Kodagu as a model for responsible tourism in Karnataka. The district will monitor compliance and enforce penalties for violations.
