State authorities in Kerala have imposed a total fine of Rs 62,000 on multiplexes after uncovering 25 violations for charging excessively high food prices.
Kerala's consumer welfare department launched a surprise inspection of several cinema multiplexes after receiving complaints about steep food prices. Inspectors found 25 separate violations of the state's price‑control regulations, primarily concerning popcorn, soft drinks and snack combos sold inside the theatres.
Each identified violation attracted a monetary penalty, bringing the total fine to Rs 62,000. The authorities warned that repeat offenders could face higher penalties or suspension of their food‑service licences.
Multiplex operators were instructed to align their menu prices with the maximum retail price guidelines issued by the state government. The crackdown aims to protect movie‑goers from exploitative pricing and ensure fair competition among vendors.
The department will continue periodic monitoring of cinema food outlets across Kerala to deter future breaches and uphold consumer rights.
