In a protest over the Vande Mataram controversy, the Kerala unit of the BJP’s youth wing set fire to effigies of political activist Satheesan and former Pakistani leader Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
On 14 September 2024, members of the Kerala BJP Youth Wing staged an effigy burning in front of the state assembly complex in Thiruvananthapuram. The protest was directed at the Vande Mataram row, where activist Satheesan had publicly criticized the anthem.
The youths set fire to life‑size effigies of Satheesan and Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, as a symbolic act of dissent. Local media captured the flames and the crowd’s chants.
Satheesan’s supporters condemned the act as an insult to democratic values, while the BJP’s state spokesperson described the burning as a “symbolic protest against anti‑nationalist sentiments.”
