Fishermen from Kasimedu have announced an indefinite strike, demanding the release of their boats that were seized in Andhra Pradesh.
Kasimedu, a coastal fishing enclave in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, has called for an open‑ended strike after several of its vessels were detained by authorities in Andhra Pradesh. The fishermen say the boats were seized during a recent enforcement operation, leaving them without essential equipment for their livelihood.
The strike, announced on Monday, will halt all fishing activities until the detained boats are returned. Representatives of the Kasimedu community have written to the Andhra Pradesh government, seeking an immediate release and compensation for the loss of income.
Local officials in Tamil Nadu have expressed concern over the economic impact on the fishing community and urged a swift resolution. The fishermen warned that prolonged inaction could force them to seek legal recourse and further disrupt the regional seafood supply chain.
No official response from the Andhra Pradesh authorities has been recorded as of now, and the situation remains under close watch by both state governments and maritime trade bodies.
