The Karnataka government has asked the Union government to fast‑track the wildlife clearance required for the Mekedatu drinking‑water scheme, citing urgent water needs for the region.
Karnataka has formally urged the Union government to accelerate the wildlife clearance for the Mekedatu drinking‑water project, a scheme intended to divert water from the Cauvery River to meet the growing demand of Bengaluru and nearby districts. The state government says the delay in obtaining the environmental clearance is hampering its ability to address chronic water shortages. It has written to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, requesting that the pending assessment be processed on an urgent basis. Officials highlighted that the project, once approved, will enhance water security for millions of residents and support agricultural and industrial activities in the region. The centre’s response will determine the timeline for the project's commencement.
