Karnataka Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar has announced an Rs 8 increase in the price of milk, citing the state's severe drought and rising production costs as the main reasons.
The Karnataka government has announced a Rs 8 hike in the retail price of milk, effective from the next billing cycle. Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar said the decision was driven by a severe drought that has affected dairy farms across the state, leading to lower milk yields.
Shivakumar also highlighted that rising input costs – including feed, fuel and transportation – have pushed production expenses higher. "These factors have made it unsustainable for dairy farmers to maintain the current price," he said.
Consumers are expected to feel the impact, especially in rural areas where milk is a staple. The government has assured that it will monitor the situation closely and will consider further measures if the price increase proves burdensome.
The CM added that the state will continue to support farmers through subsidies and drought relief programmes, aiming to balance the interests of producers and consumers.
