A Jawaharlal Nehru University student was taken into custody after assaulting a fellow student on campus, allegedly because of the victim’s friendship with a woman.

Police said a student of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) physically attacked another student on the university’s South Campus after learning that the victim was friends with a woman. The confrontation escalated into a violent assault, prompting by‑standers to intervene and alert campus security.

According to the investigation, the assailant claimed the victim’s relationship with the woman was inappropriate, which he cited as the motive for the attack. The victim sustained injuries that required medical attention, though no serious harm was reported.

Campus police arrived promptly, detained the attacker and handed him over to Delhi Police. The suspect was booked under sections of the Indian Penal Code relating to assault and was produced before a magistrate.

JNU’s administration released a brief statement condemning the incident, emphasizing that the university does not tolerate any form of violence and that a thorough internal inquiry will be conducted alongside the police probe.

The case adds to growing concerns about safety on educational campuses, with authorities urging students to resolve personal disputes through dialogue rather than aggression.
