J&K Govt Offers One‑Time Switch from NPS to Old Pension Scheme for Pre‑2009 Posts

The Jammu and Kashmir administration has announced a one‑time provision allowing employees in posts advertised before 2009 to move from the National Pension Scheme to the earlier pension system.

The Jammu and Kashmir government has issued a circular granting a one‑time option for eligible government employees to shift from the National Pension Scheme (NPS) to the pre‑2009 Old Pension Scheme (OPS). The provision applies exclusively to staff appointed to posts that were advertised before 2009, allowing them to opt for the more traditional pension arrangement.

The NPS, introduced nationwide after 2009, replaced the defined‑benefit OPS with a defined‑contribution model. Many senior employees in J&K have expressed a preference for the OPS because it offers a guaranteed pension based on last drawn salary, unlike the market‑linked returns of the NPS.

Officials indicated that the switch can be exercised only once and will be processed through the department’s pension cell. While exact numbers have not been disclosed, the move is expected to affect a sizable segment of the state’s civil‑service workforce, providing them with greater retirement security.

The decision reflects the state’s effort to address pension‑related concerns among its staff and aligns with broader demands for more predictable retirement benefits.
