The Jammu and Kashmir government has established committees to oversee the rollout of its 2026 compressed biogas policy, aiming to boost renewable energy and reduce methane emissions.

The state government of Jammu and Kashmir has announced the creation of specialized committees to spearhead the implementation of its compressed biogas policy slated for 2026. The policy, which focuses on converting agricultural and municipal waste into a clean, renewable fuel, is part of the government’s broader strategy to enhance energy security and curb greenhouse gas emissions.

Each committee will be tasked with mapping out project timelines, securing funding, and coordinating with local authorities and private partners. Officials say the bodies will also monitor compliance with environmental standards and facilitate technology transfer to rural communities.

Experts predict that the initiative could generate up to 200 MW of renewable power by 2026, providing a significant boost to the region’s electricity grid while creating jobs in waste management and biogas plant operations.

The government has scheduled a series of stakeholder consultations in the coming weeks to refine the policy framework and finalize the allocation of resources. The committees are expected to report their progress quarterly to the state’s Department of Energy and Renewable Resources.
