Union Minister Jitendra Singh inaugurated the 183rd seismological observatory in Kishtwar, Jammu & Kashmir, enhancing seismic monitoring in the region.
Union Minister of State for Earth Sciences Jitendra Singh formally opened India’s 183rd seismological observatory on Thursday in Kishtwar, Jammu & Kashmir. The new facility, part of the national network of seismic stations, will record ground‑motion data from the seismically active Himalayan belt.
Kishtwar lies in a zone that frequently experiences earthquakes, and the observatory is expected to improve real‑time monitoring and early‑warning capabilities for local communities and disaster‑management agencies. The installation includes advanced seismographs and data‑processing equipment that will feed into the Indian Meteorological Department’s seismic monitoring system.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by local officials and scientists. The observatory’s presence in the region is seen as a step toward strengthening India’s preparedness for seismic hazards, especially in the fragile Himalayan terrain.
