Economist Jeffrey Sachs says India's growth trajectory could make it the world's largest economy by the end of the century.

Renowned economist Jeffrey Sachs told India Business Trade that, based on current trends, India could emerge as the world’s largest economy by 2100. He highlighted the country’s sustained GDP growth, expanding middle class and demographic advantage as key drivers of this long‑term outlook.
Sachs pointed to India’s annual growth rate, which has averaged around 6‑7% over the past decade, as a foundation for his projection. He noted that a youthful population entering the workforce and ongoing reforms in sectors such as technology, manufacturing and services could keep the momentum alive for decades.
While optimistic, Sachs cautioned that achieving the top spot will require consistent policy support, investment in human capital and infrastructure, and resilience against external shocks. Other analysts agree that India’s trajectory is promising, but timelines may vary depending on how challenges are addressed.
The statement adds to a growing chorus of experts who see India as a major economic contender in the 21st century, underscoring the importance of strategic planning to translate potential into sustained prosperity.
