JD(U) senior leader Sanjay Jha raised concerns about Bihar’s water security and opposed the renewal of the Ganga water sharing treaty with Bangladesh.
Sanjay Jha, a senior leader of the Janata Dal (United), publicly highlighted Bihar’s apprehensions regarding the proposed renewal of the Ganga water sharing agreement with Bangladesh.
He argued that the existing treaty, which allocates a fixed volume of Ganga water to Bangladesh, does not reflect the rising demand for irrigation, drinking water and industrial use in Bihar’s flood‑prone districts.
Jha called for a renegotiation that safeguards Bihar’s interests, urging the state government and the central ministry to seek a more balanced arrangement before any renewal is signed.
He warned that ignoring Bihar’s water needs could exacerbate agrarian distress and affect the livelihoods of millions dependent on the river.
The statement comes ahead of the scheduled talks between India and Bangladesh on the treaty, and the JD(U) has said it will monitor the process closely.
