The Indo‑Tibetan Border Police has announced an increase in its elite Shaurya Commando units, deploying them to the high‑altitude frontier where they will operate alongside regular troops against Chinese forces in temperatures as low as minus 45 degrees Celsius.
The Indo‑Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) disclosed that it is expanding the size of its Shaurya Commando force, an elite unit trained for high‑altitude warfare. The increase comes as part of a broader effort to reinforce India's defensive capabilities along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.
Shaurya Commandos are specially selected soldiers equipped and trained to operate in extreme cold, often below minus 45 degrees Celsius. Their training includes advanced mountaineering, winter survival, and close‑quarter combat, enabling them to function effectively in the harsh Himalayan environment.
The newly augmented contingent will be deployed to the disputed border sectors where recent standoffs have heightened tensions. By positioning these commandos alongside regular ITBP troops, the force aims to deter any aggressive moves and maintain a robust presence against Chinese soldiers stationed on the opposite side.
ITBP officials emphasized that the expansion reflects a proactive stance, ensuring that India's border security remains resilient despite the challenging weather and geopolitical pressures.
