The Indian Space Research Organisation announced plans to deploy a new satellite aimed at enhancing the country’s regional navigation system as an alternative to the US GPS.
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has revealed its intention to add another satellite to the nation’s navigation constellation, seeking to bolster the indigenous alternative to the United States’ Global Positioning System.
The forthcoming satellite will augment the existing NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation) network, which already provides positioning services over the Indian sub‑continent and surrounding regions.
By expanding the satellite fleet, ISRO aims to improve accuracy, reliability and coverage, thereby reducing dependence on foreign navigation systems and supporting both civilian and strategic applications.
The move underscores India’s broader push for self‑reliance in critical space‑based infrastructure.
