The iconic Sarafa market in Indore will remain shut from November 6 to 8, covering the Dhanteras to Diwali period, halting its famed street‑food stalls.

Indore’s centuries‑old Sarafa market, famed for its night‑time chaat stalls, will be closed for three consecutive days beginning on November 6. The shutdown, which spans the Dhanteras to Diwali window, is intended to allow extensive lighting and decorative work that transforms the lane into a festive showcase.

During the closure, the 56 food stalls that usually draw large crowds will remain non‑operational, and visitors will only be able to view the illuminated arches, lanterns and thematic displays set up for the festival. Authorities have confirmed that the market will reopen on November 9, when the decorations are expected to be fully in place.

Local vendors expressed disappointment over the temporary loss of revenue but welcomed the opportunity to present a more attractive environment for tourists and residents alike. The city’s municipal corporation has assured that safety measures and crowd‑control plans are in place for the reopening.

The decision reflects a broader trend among Indian heritage markets to blend cultural heritage with modern festive aesthetics, aiming to boost footfall and tourism during major celebrations such as Diwali.
