UPI transaction value hit a record Rs 1 lakh crore per day, but the surge masks uneven growth across India’s digital payment ecosystem.

The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) recorded a historic daily transaction value of Rs 1 lakh crore, according to data released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). The milestone underscores the platform’s central role in India’s cash‑less push, with millions of users and merchants relying on instant mobile payments.

While the aggregate volume surged, analysts point to a disparity in how the growth is distributed. High‑value transfers and urban users are driving much of the increase, whereas many small merchants and rural consumers continue to lag in adoption. This unevenness raises concerns about the inclusivity of the digital payment ecosystem.

Industry observers suggest that policy measures and targeted incentives may be needed to bridge the gap, ensuring that the benefits of a robust UPI network reach all segments of the economy.

The record also highlights the resilience of India’s digital infrastructure, which has sustained rapid transaction growth despite broader economic fluctuations.

Stakeholders are watching closely to see whether the next phase of expansion will address the underlying imbalances while maintaining the platform’s momentum.
