India's September Inflation Likely Hits 5.4% on Food and Energy Costs

A recent poll suggests India's consumer price index rose to 5.4% in September, driven by higher food and energy prices.

A poll conducted by Business Standard indicates that India’s consumer price index (CPI) for September likely rose to 5.4%, marking a modest increase from the 5.1% rate reported for August.

The rise is attributed mainly to higher prices in the food and energy categories. Food inflation climbed to 6.8% year‑on‑year, while energy prices, including petroleum and electricity, added 4.5% to the overall index.

This figure aligns with the trend of a gradual easing of inflation after a peak of 6.2% in July, suggesting that price pressures are moderating but remain above the Reserve Bank of India’s 4% target.

Economists warn that the continued rise in food and energy costs could keep the RBI’s policy rate on hold until the next monetary policy meeting, as the central bank seeks to balance growth with price stability.
