India's Postal and Courier Services to Mandate OTP Verification Before Parcel Delivery to Curb Online Fraud
Postal and major courier companies will now require customers to verify their identity via OTP before parcels are delivered, a move aimed at reducing online parcel fraud.
India's postal services and major courier operators have announced a new mandatory rule that parcels will be delivered only after the recipient has verified their identity through an OTP (One-Time Password) sent to their mobile phone.
The measure is part of a broader effort to curb rising online parcel fraud, where fraudsters have exploited delivery processes to intercept or misdirect shipments.
Under the new protocol, a courier will hold the parcel until the recipient confirms the OTP on the delivery app or SMS. If the OTP is not verified within a specified window, the parcel will be returned to the sender or held at a local facility.
Industry analysts say the change could reduce fraud incidents but may also introduce delays for customers who are unable to receive OTPs promptly. Postal and courier companies have said they will provide alternative verification methods for such cases.
