Indian Railways has announced it is prepared to run water trains to supply drinking water to drought-affected areas of Maharashtra. However, the state government must first complete necessary formalities before the service can commence.

Indian Railways said it has the logistics and rolling stock ready to operate special water trains that can transport large quantities of water to regions facing acute shortage. The initiative aims to alleviate drinking water distress in parts of Maharashtra hit by prolonged dry spells.

Officials from the railway ministry emphasized that the service can be launched as soon as the state government provides the required clearances and arranges for loading and unloading facilities at designated stations.

The state administration is expected to finalize the modalities, including identification of water sources and coordination with local authorities, before the trains can be flagged off. Once these prerequisites are met, the water trains will begin ferrying water to the most affected districts.
