The Indian Railways has introduced a rule that forbids passengers from using phone‑charging facilities on trains between 11 pm and 5 am, citing safety and power‑load concerns.
Indian Railways announced that passengers will not be allowed to plug in mobile phones or other electronic devices for charging on any train service between 11 pm and 5 am. The restriction applies across all classes and routes, and railway staff have been instructed to monitor compliance during the night hours.
The railway authority explained that the ban is aimed at preventing electrical overloads on the train’s power system, which can become strained during the night when fewer staff are on board. It also seeks to reduce the risk of fire hazards and equipment misuse that could jeopardise passenger safety.
Travelers are advised to fully charge their devices before boarding or to use portable power banks for the overnight journey. The rule will be enforced from the next scheduled service, and violators may face a fine as per the railway’s passenger‑conduct guidelines.
The decision forms part of a broader effort by Indian Railways to streamline onboard services and ensure reliable power supply for essential operations during low‑traffic periods.
