The Railway Board has sanctioned the deployment of the domestic Kavach collision‑avoidance system on more than 3,000 km of track in the Southern and Western Railway zones, aiming to reduce train accidents.

The Railway Board has approved the installation of the domestic Kavach safety system on more than 3,000 km of track in the Southern and Western Railway zones, to be carried out in the coming months.

Kavach, a train collision‑avoidance system developed indigenously, automatically intervenes when two trains are on a collision course, braking the train to prevent accidents.

The decision follows a series of safety reviews after several incidents on the network, and aims to enhance passenger safety across the vast network of the two zones.

Implementation will involve retrofitting existing locomotives and installing trackside equipment along the designated routes, with an expected completion by the end of the fiscal year.

Railway officials said the deployment will reduce the risk of derailments and head‑on collisions, and is part of a broader push to modernise safety infrastructure across the country.
