Researchers have documented the Indian Peafowl in Orang National Park, marking the bird's first confirmed sighting in the protected area.
The wildlife monitoring team of Assam's Forest Department reported the first confirmed observation of the Indian Peafowl (Pavo cristatus) within the boundaries of Orang National Park. The sighting was recorded during a routine biodiversity survey conducted earlier this month, and the data has been submitted to the state’s wildlife database.
Orang National Park, located on the north bank of the Brahmaputra River, is renowned for its population of the endangered white‑rumped vulture and the Gangetic dolphin. The appearance of the national bird adds a new dimension to the park's avian diversity, suggesting that the grassland‑wetland mosaic provides suitable habitat for ground‑dwelling pheasants as well.
Conservationists view the record as a positive indicator of habitat health, noting that the Indian Peafowl thrives in areas with ample food sources and minimal human disturbance. The Forest Department plans to incorporate the species into its future monitoring protocols to track population trends.
