The central government has approved a standardized list of official names for 28 places in the Union Territory of Ladakh, aiming to resolve long‑standing variations in spelling and usage.
The Ministry of Home Affairs announced that the government has finalized the official nomenclature for 28 geographic locations across Ladakh. The move seeks to eliminate the multiple spellings and transliterations that have appeared in official documents, maps and tourism literature.
Authorities said the standardisation will aid administrative clarity, improve the accuracy of cartographic products and support consistent usage in education and media. It also addresses concerns raised by local communities who have long advocated for uniform recognition of traditional names.
The new names will be incorporated into all future government publications, digital databases and signage within the Union Territory. Implementation is expected to begin within the next few weeks, with periodic reviews planned to incorporate any further local inputs.
