The government announced a target of 5 MT of green hydrogen production capacity by 2030 to boost clean energy transition.

New Delhi – The Union government has outlined an ambitious target to achieve 5 million tonnes (MT) of green hydrogen capacity by the end of the decade. The figure reflects the cumulative installed capacity of electrolyzers that will generate hydrogen using renewable electricity, without emitting carbon.

The move aligns with India’s broader climate commitments under the Paris Agreement and the National Hydrogen Mission, which aims to position the country as a major exporter of clean hydrogen. Officials say the target will be met through a mix of public‑private partnerships, incentives for renewable power, and streamlined approvals for large‑scale projects.

Industry analysts note that reaching the 5 MT mark will require substantial investment in renewable generation, grid upgrades, and water‑sourcing infrastructure. The government has pledged fiscal support and tax benefits to attract domestic and foreign investors, while also planning to develop export hubs at coastal ports.

If realized, the capacity could cut India’s reliance on fossil fuels in sectors such as steel, chemicals, and transport, while creating new jobs in the emerging green economy.
