India has re‑opened a riverine trade corridor linking Dibrugarh in Assam with Dhaka, ending a 70‑year hiatus. The move aims to boost bilateral commerce via inland waterways.
The government has officially revived a riverine trade route that connects the northeastern city of Dibrugarh with Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka. The corridor, dormant for seven decades, will use the Brahmaputra and its tributaries to ferry goods across the border.
Officials say the revived link is expected to provide a cost‑effective alternative to road and rail transport, especially for bulk commodities such as tea, timber and agricultural produce from Assam. By leveraging inland waterways, both countries hope to reduce logistics costs and shorten delivery times.
The initiative forms part of a broader push to deepen economic ties with Bangladesh and to diversify India’s transport infrastructure in the northeast. Authorities are coordinating customs and navigation protocols to ensure smooth operations once the route becomes fully functional.
Stakeholders anticipate that the river corridor will stimulate regional development, create jobs in logistics and allied sectors, and strengthen the strategic partnership between the two neighbours.
