India Post has opened more than 1.7 million Postal Savings Bank accounts in Jammu & Kashmir, boosting financial inclusion in the region.
India Post announced that it has successfully opened over 1.7 million Postal Savings Bank (POSB) accounts across Jammu & Kashmir. The figure, disclosed by the Chief Postmaster General, reflects a concerted effort to extend banking services to remote and underserved areas of the state.
The new accounts were created through existing post offices, which serve as banking touchpoints in many villages and towns. By leveraging the postal network, the initiative aims to bring basic savings facilities, direct benefit transfers and other financial products within reach of the local population.
Officials said the surge in account openings aligns with the government's broader financial inclusion agenda, seeking to reduce the reliance on informal credit sources and encourage a culture of savings. The Daily Excelsior reported the milestone as a significant step toward integrating Jammu & Kashmir more fully into the formal banking system.
The move is expected to facilitate smoother delivery of government schemes, pension payments and other subsidies directly into beneficiaries' accounts, thereby enhancing transparency and efficiency.
India Post plans to continue expanding its POSB footprint, with further outreach programs scheduled for the coming months to ensure that more residents can benefit from formal banking services.
